Desert Queen 2010

A jeep journey in the south of Israel. For women only. 27 october – 2 november 2010

Tens of women from Israel and around the world are expected to participate in the third annual women-only Desert Queen jeep expedition through Israel’s desert landscape, which will take place from 27 October to 2 November 2010. Desert Queen 2010 combines a competitive outdoor adventure and 4WD driving expedition with personal empowerment – and the opportunity to experience the sheer beauty of Israel’s deserts and the warmth of its people.  Organized by the Jewish Agency for Israel and Geographical Tours with the cooperation of the Tourism Ministry, the Israeli jeep expedition is a sister project of international Desert Queen journeys.

This year’s seven-day journey will take place in the beautiful desert terrains of Israel's  southern region, including Mitzpe Ramon, Nahal Barak and Moa, with an orientation day on 26 October. In addition to the traditional jeep and outdoor adventure, Desert Queen 2010 will also include special features, for example, a unique desert-based ecological project. The final route will be kept confidential by the organizers with details only revealed to the participants on a day-to-day basis.

Participants are put to the test as individuals - and no less important - as a team. Each journey is based on a 4x4 jeep convoy in which the female team members (3-4 per jeep) drive through challenging terrain. Desert Queen 2010, which includes hiking, self-exploration, teamwork and sleeping under the stars, is led by an experienced guide and includes full logistical support including a full time doctor.

Previous participants refer to the strength of the bonding between the women, as well as the beauty and serenity of the landscape. In the words of Alisa Coleman who participated in Desert Queen 2009: “It was exciting for me to meet different women, from different parts of the world and different parts of Israel. We all came from different stages of life, with different pasts that had formed who we are. The connections that were formed are indescribable to those who haven't experienced it.”  And for Freda Surki: “With the scenery and serenity of the Israeli Negev around us, one can only appreciate the opportunity and hope to experience it more and more.”

Participants must be aged 20 and over, with a valid driving license. However, previous 4WD experience is not mandatory. Registered candidates will be screened for compatibility. Kosher food is provided and the laws of Shabbat respected.
